Monday, 7 March Couchsurfing in Popayan. A couple of pics of Popayan. After a year in South America, I have stopped taking pictures of churches as they are now the norm. Well here is one below. This part of the town was actually a miniature reproduction of the real town centre of Popayan. The couch we surfed avec Merlin le baraque devant!
The family we stayed with were incredibly kind, all took great care of us and not once did we feel like we were in the way. Couchsurfing is an amazing way to travel, why the hell we didn t do more of it before!! Colombia is much more expensive than Peru or Ecuador. People are incredibly nice. On top of this gringos are an incredibly rare specie compared to hastling Peru. The country is no way as dangerous as it is portrayed in Europe.
There is still a lot of mess going on here but the conficts are between political parties and tourists aren t targets for kidnappers. Street crime is high like most places in South America, that s just down to keeping yourself discreet and not walking around the wrong places at the wrong time.
For me, in Colombia there are 4 groups: They are highly trained militaries with twisted minds. They are unofficially financed by the Colombian government. Officially they are a separate political entity. The FARC is a communist terrorist group that used to have some sense but these days all they want is land to grow Coca and produce cocaine. This means not enough money is put into healthcare and education. The indigeneous population don t have much to do with all this, they were here before anyone else.
They have their own police and laws and keep their own traditions, they only influence they have form the white man is Christianism. They are united with many other indigeneous communities of South America and are reknown internationnally. Colombians, despite eating rice 3 times a day, have lovely food. Here Tamale mushed potato sweetcorn and pig "parts" wrapped in a banana leaf and boiled with a pastry and colombian style scrambled egg. Electronic music is very very rare in Colombia.
