Douala National Times -The untold economic hardship and suffering witnessed by some Anglophone Cameroonians fleeing the restive North West and South West Regions of Cameroon has compelled many internally displaced women and young girls to engage in prostitution as the only means of survival. Women and girls who have fled the ongoing war rocking the two English-speaking Regions are spotted in major towns like Yaounde, Douala, Limbe, Buea as commercial sex hawkers in order to earn a living.
Many of these young girls have abandoned their business premises, farms, education and other social and economic engagement due to the ongoing Crisis. As the crisis deteriorates with fighting penetrating major towns, more persons are becoming internally displaced daily and majority of them are women, young girls and children.
The consequences of the on-going Crisis are enormous with many young girls seeing prostitution as the most profitable business. The National Times toured some towns like Douala, Limbe and Buea to interview internally displaced persons fleeing the two restive Regions of Cameroon of what they are doing to make ends meet. The National Times gathered that 19 percent of young girls who have fled the North West and South West Regions are commercial sex workers. The atmosphere at the bar was a busy one like every drinking spot, but with young girls of Anglophone expression standing at every spot.
The National Times team approached two sales girls who revealed that majority of the young girls moving in and out of the bar are Anglophones commercial sex workers who recently joined prostitution as they arrived Douala fleeing from the on-going Crisis plaguing the North West and South West Regions. I use to live with my aunt here in Douala, but things were so difficult such that she could not cater for me and her children. Narrating how she became a prostitute, Bessem revealed that her dream was to become a Medical Doctor, but the on-going crisis has compelled her to become a prostitute.
I always dreamt of becoming a Medical Doctor but today this is me…. My current life style is the aftermath of the on-going crisis. Being in need of money for my needs, I had no choice but to become a commercial sex worker.
